Winning Audiobook Summary

Who ever said being nice would get you to the top?

Certainly not Alexandra Miles. She isn’t nice, but she’s more than skilled at playing the part. She floats through the halls of Spencer High, effortlessly orchestrating the actions of everyone around her, making people bend to her whim without even noticing they’re doing it. She is the queen of Spencer High—and it’s time to make it official.

Alexandra has a goal, you see—Homecoming Queen. Her ambitions are far grander than her small town will allow, but Homecoming is just the first step to achieving total domination. So when peppy, popular Erin Hewett moves to town and seems to have a real shot at the crown, Alexandra has to take action.

With the help of her trusted friend Sam, she devises her most devious plot yet. She’ll introduce an unexpected third competitor into the mix, one whose meteoric rise—and devastating fall—will destroy Erin’s chances once and for all. Alexandra can run a scheme like this in her sleep. What could possibly go wrong?

Lara Deloza’s crackling depiction of a perpetually two-steps-ahead popular girl makes for a fun, wicked story with a protagonist that readers will love to hate.

If Regina George wanted to be Homecoming Queen, there’d be hell to pay for anyone who got in her way.

This is pretty much the premise of the WINNING, which is immensely readable and keeps you on your toes. Just when you think one girl is about to swindle another, the other girl almost always manages to see it coming and turns the tables. I liked that we saw various different POVs, and that one of them was the Queen Bee herself, Alexandra Miles. She’s a ruthless, manipulative schemer without an ounce of pity, and her determination to win her crown (with the kind of loopy logic that only exists in rom-coms) spares no expense or feeling.

Winning Audiobook Reviews

Winning does exactly that. It wins! You know that you have really good book on your hands when you get mad that you have to stop reading. So many fun characters in this book and you will love to hate Alexandra Miles. She is like Blair Waldorf, Kathryn Merteuil & Diana Ladris all rolled into one! No spoilers, but so much plotting, planning & back stabbing! Loved it from start to finish. Do yourself a favor and read this book. Great job once again by Ms Deloza!

The thing about MEAN GIRLS, however, was that the film was not only a satirical look at social hierarchies in high school, but it was also so freaking funny. That’s where the weakness lies in WINNING; it’s definitely entertaining, and you want to see people get their comeuppance, but it’s neither sharp-witted enough in its narrative and dialogue, nor smart and original enough in its plot to go down as a truly great and memorable book. And then the door is left open for a sequel as well? Bleh.

Still. Points for an unabashed anti-heroine, for juggling multiple POVs well, and for a lesbian BFF subplot. These girls are cruel to each other, and it’s weirdly gratifying and fun to watch…but not quite as fun as it could’ve been. I want a story like this to be screamingly funny–and to really go for the jugular, not just settle for a slap on the wrist.

An advance copy was provided by the publisher for this review.

Side note to those who might get upset over these things in YA, with spoilers: there’s liberal back-stabbing and underage drinking

Glass Sword Audiobook Reviews

Oh Glass Sword…I have this love-hate relationship with your cliffhanger. I hate waiting for the next book. But, cliffhangers stick with me. I think about them, obsess a bit, google spoilers, pre-order the next book and want to find someone immediately who I can talk to about that book.

Book one, Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard, ended on a cliffhanger. I waited patiently for Glass Sword. I had to get it.  I just finished reading it. It ends on…wait for it…another cliffhanger. And, I also loved this Glass Sword almost as much as Red Queen. Which is hella lot.
The marketing girl in me applauds the author. A cliffhanger is the perfect tease, so memorable when done well. The reader in me screams. And may throw things.

Mare, our Red h with lightning shooting from her fingers, is on a mission to find more people like her. There are other Reds with abilities and she wants them for her army. She wants to take down Maven, the young king she once cared for, but actually turned out to be a major dick. On that part…I kind of wonder. Is it possible he’s not awful, and there’s something we don’t know about him? I read a lot of musings on this after this book (note my addiction to googling books) and some are still #TeamMaven.

This story is really about Mare and her struggle with her own humanity. The anger and hurt she’s feeling, her desire to save the world….but at what cost? She maybe turning into a bit of a monster. There are moments when her behavior is terrible, she kills people who didn’t need to die. Mare is full of flaws.

Mare, Cal, Farley, Kilorn and Shade team up to find the super Reds before Maven does. It’s an uneasy alliance. No trust. That’s a theme, too…trust no one. At some point, every character has something to hide, an agenda, a reason to lie. I LOVED it. Lots of surprises. They go on one rescue mission after another, many with great success. I delighted in learning about the powers possessed by the new super Reds. Maven gets to some super Reds before our heroes and his evil and total depravity is shocking. Hard to reconcile the old Maven with this one.

Then there’s Cal. He killed his father. Not his fault, the queen controlled his mind and made him do it. People hate him. They fear him. He has no home, no family, no place to be or life to live. He’s lost. I felt bad for him and then at times I thought, well…you weren’t really a great guy. He turned his back on a lot of disfunction in the kingdom. Outright, ignored it. There’s chemistry with Mare and Cal. Again, not really any trust happening though. They definitely grow closer through shared experiences, pain and a small bed. I’m not sure what I think about them. Am I #TeamCal? I can’t say.

Then we have the end of Glass Sword. The cliffhanger. The last bit. Plot twist. Big time.

Everything, Everything Audiobook Summary

Risk everything . . . for love with this #1 New York Times bestseller.

What if you couldn’t touch anything in the outside world? Never breathe in the fresh air, feel the sun warm your face . . . or kiss the boy next door? In Everything, Everything, Maddy is a girl who’s literally allergic to the outside world, and Olly is the boy who moves in next door . . . and becomes the greatest risk she’s ever taken.

My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Everything, Everything will make you laugh, cry, and feel everything in between. It’s an innovative, inspiring, and heartbreakingly romantic debut novel that unfolds via vignettes, diary entries, illustrations, and more.

And don’t miss Nicola Yoon’s The Sun Is Also A Star, the #1 New York Times bestseller in which two teens are brought together just when it seems like the universe is sending them in opposite directions.

Cinder Audiobook Summary

The #1 New York Times Bestselling Series!

A wicked mash-up of fairy tale and Terminator—set in a Star Wars kind of world—Marissa Meyer’s Cinder is a fresh and fiercely ingenious futuristic retelling of Cinderella

Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth’s fate hinges on one girl. . . .

Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She’s a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister’s illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai’s, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world’s future.

Cinder Audiobook Reviews

This book sat on my shelf for a few months because I wasn’t entirely sure how I would react to it. The premise certainly made me curious. Cyborg Cinderella with aliens. Hmm. Either this was going to go south very quickly or it might just turn out to be worthwhile. Either way, I didn’t want to get involved in a new series when I still had several unread books on my self. As it turns out, that fear was well-placed. I finished this book in three days and promptly ordered the second one. I’m even considering ordering the third one well in advance in order to avoid the two-day wait.
The beginning piqued my interest, and I remember thinking that I was glad it wouldn’t be a dull read. I hate picking up books with amazing covers and then finding out that the pages between said covers didn’t live up to the expectations. The world-building for Cinder was solid, the writing grammatically sound and even the style and voice drew me in a little. The setting kind of unsettled me. I’ve never been a huge Asian-setting person, but this wasn’t off-putting in any manner. It was unique and original. Somewhere along the way, this story won me over, hook, line, and sinker. I became heavily invested in the lives of the characters, and utterly obsessed with the newest plot twist. There were some things I found a tad predictable, but in a way, that didn’t detract from the story either. I was more interested in the presentation of the few predictable moments and there were plenty of unpredictable events to make up for it. The story was age-appropriate, which is a huge bonus in my world. And as much as I adore fairy tale retellings, I can’t get over how few references there actually are to Cinderella. I just loved that the story was its own and that it tipped its hat to Cinderella instead of mimicking it. That was something I found phenomenal. Don’t get me wrong, the connections are pretty clear, but they’re clever and the story doesn’t hinge on them. The story isn’t dependent on the connections, but it uses them to its advantage.
I don’t like to just dish out five-star reviews, but I think this book truly deserves it. A job very well-done. Part of me wishes I had been brave enough to read this sooner, and yet, the other part of me is selfishly glad because now I don’t have to wait for the sequels to come out! I just have to order them!!!

Allegiant Audiobook Summary

The explosive conclusion to Veronica Roth’s #1 New York Times bestselling Divergent series of books reveals the secrets of the dystopian world that captivated millions of readers and film fans in Divergent and Insurgent.

One choice will define you. What if your whole world was a lie? What if a single revelation—like a single choice—changed everything? What if love and loyalty made you do things you never expected?

Told from a riveting dual perspective, this third installment in the series follows Tris and Tobias as they battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and their selves—while facing impossible choices of courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.

And don’t miss The Fates Divide, Veronica Roth’s powerful sequel to the bestselling Carve the Mark!.

Allegiant Audiobook Reviews

I will do my best to separate my emotions for this review.

I have loved this series from the beginning. I loved the way Veronica Roth wrote and how she told a story. I loved the way she built her characters and allowed us to see both the good and bad in them, and how the characters were not “saved” from consequences of their choices. I always felt the characters were real to themselves, even in their most confusing and self-doubt moments, and that made me love them more. So… despite how angry Tris’ decisions made me, it still was “true” to her character (in my opinion). I wouldn’t have expected anything less of her.

That said, though, I still felt this couldn’t be the “end.” To me, it felt there was still unanswered questions, and problems had not yet been resolved. Despite all the characters remaining true to themselves and some of the “big” conflicts being resolved, I felt no closure to the series, and actually found myself searching if there would be another book. It just did did not feel like the right fit to the end, even if the ending was to be a gut-wrenching one.

As an avid reader, to pre-ordered the last two books in the series, I felt like I was strung along, to be hurt and confused by a bad breakup or something. I’m not sure I can recommend this series anymore. I was extremely excited about the movie coming out, too, and now… I’m not sure I want to even bother.

Use caution, if you’re debating whether to give this series a try.

Star Wars Ahsoka You Audiobook Summary

Fans have long wondered what happened to Ahsoka after she left the Jedi Order near the end of the Clone Wars, and before she re-appeared as the mysterious Rebel operative Fulcrum in Rebels. Finally, her story will begin to be told. Following her experiences with the Jedi and the devastation of Order 66, Ahsoka is unsure she can be part of a larger whole ever again. But her desire to fight the evils of the Empire and protect those who need it will lead her right to Bail Organa, and the Rebel Alliance.

Star Wars Ahsoka You Audiobook Reviews

E.K. Johnston’s Star Wars: Ahsoka begins following the adventures of the Togrutan Force user exactly one year after the establishment of the Galactic Empire. This Young Adult novel is intended for ages 12-18 and grades 7-12. However, this 40-year-old reviewer loved the book, mainly due to my unashamed love of Ahsoka Tano and The Clone Wars. Here are some of the highlights.

Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano was first introduced in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and quickly became a fan favorite. Viewers watched her grow from a “snippy,” brash padawan learner to a confident young warrior who frequently saved the day for her master, Anakin Skywalker. Thrust into the crucible of combat with the besieged clone battalion and their Jedi on the planet of Christophsis, Ahsoka had to learn quickly and be a strong warrior from an early age. Through the remainder of the Clone Wars, Ahsoka was present at several key battles and forged tight relationships with many, including Clone Captain Rex, the astromech R2-D2, and Senator Bail Organa. All three of these characters figure into Ahsoka in important ways.

*** VERY MILD SPOILERS FOLLOW***

The novel features many flashbacks, interludes, and scenes which answer some lingering questions since the end of The Clone Wars, raise a few more, and provide detail that help link the prequel and original trilogies. Here are some of my favorites:

‘ Maul and Ahsoka at Mandalore
‘ Ahsoka’s last interaction with Rex (until Star Wars Rebels reunites them)
‘ Insight into Anakin’s thoughts as “Obi-Wan’s new padawan” approaches Christophsis
‘ Obi-Wan’s solitude – and finding an old friend – on Tatooine
‘ The origin of Ahsoka’s white lightsabers and the codename Fulcrum
‘ Ahsoka’s thoughts about Barriss Offee

Most of the plot of the novel centers on Ahsoka’s life as she maintains a low profile to avoid attention from the Empire. She has to find odd jobs to get by, and tries not to form close relationships with others. Her connection with the Force is weakened. She thinks of the “family” she has lost due to the destruction of the Jedi Order, and searches her feelings to try to discern Anakin’s fate. Readers can feel her loneliness. Ahsoka has always been a jovial, outgoing person, quick to make friends and gain others’ trust. As it turns out, her charisma and leadership qualities have not suffered since the end of The Clone Wars; she continues to draw others to her and gain their trust, despite her efforts to live a simple life. As can be expected, she quickly finds herself at the center of a conflict. Also as can be expected, she must decide between using the Force to save the day, thus exposing herself, and maintaining her anonymity and allowing her new friends to suffer.

Overall, E.K. Johnston absolutely matches the feel of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Ahsoka does a fantastic job of bridging the gap, though it does not account for the entire time period between Ahsoka leaving the Jedi Order and her first appearance at the end of the first season of the current cartoon series. Perhaps there are more books forthcoming – hopefully also penned by Johnston!

Ahsoka is also available as an audiobook narrated by Ashley Eckstein. Eckstein, of course, is the only actor who has ever voiced Ahsoka’s character. For what it’s worth, I could hear Ashley reading all of Ahsoka’s lines in my head when I read the print version. It’s unavoidable.

Fans of Ahsoka Tano, The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels will devour this book. Highly recommended.

New Moon Audiobook Summary

I FELT LIKE I WAS TRAPPED IN ONE OF THOSE TERRIFYING NIGHTMARES…
For Bella Swan, there is one thing more important than life itself: Edward Cullen. But being in love with a vampire is even more dangerous than Bella ever could have imagined. Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of one evil vampire, but now, as their daring relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them, they realize their troubles may be just beginning. . . .
Legions of readers entranced by the New York Times bestseller Twilight are hungry for the continuing story of star-crossed lovers Bella and Edward. In New Moon, Stephenie Meyer delivers another irresistible combination of romance and suspense with a supernatural spin. Passionate, riveting, and full of surprising twists and turns, this vampire love saga is well on its way to literary immortality.

New Moon Audiobook Reviews

New Moon picks up while Bella is well on her way to recovery from the events that ended Twilight, but after an accident that reminds everyone that, yes, Bella is human and, yes, Edward and his family are indeed vampires, Edward becomes more and more distracted by his concerns for her continued safety. When he decides that the only way to protect Bella is to remove himself from her life entirely, Bella suffers from a major breakdown.

The budding friendship between Bella and Jacob draws her out of a deep depression. Despite her lack of romantic interest in him, she leads him on, afraid of falling back into her slump. She tries to be honest and tell him that she’s stuck on Edward, but can’t help but tell him that she also wants him to keep trying. It’s kind of a flaky, selfish thing to do, not exactly endearing. The whole thing left me feeling sorry for poor Jacob.

But despite all that, I felt myself mourning with her. It’s easy to say that she shouldn’t have fallen apart so much over a guy, but then again, she didn’t just lose him, she lost a family and a new sister, Alice. To have so much, love, family, acceptance and perhaps even the promise of immortality, and then to lose all of it all at once, how could she not have fallen apart? Do I agree with how she deals with it? No. Do I empathize? Yes.

As for Jacob, we get to know him in this story, and he has to be one of the most interesting characters so far. With Edward out of the picture, it’s difficult not to root for him. He’s the ultimate good guy: kind, funny and supportive. He knows Bella is broken, but wants nothing more than to make her happy and perhaps find a place in her heart. And then there’s the whole werewolf thing. Kind of hard to court a girl, especially one like Bella, when you keep turning into a wolf everytime you’re angry or jealous. I think it’s ironic that he, like Edward before him, believes the only safe option for Bella is to stay away. She just can’t seem to catch a break.

Besides all the drama, there is a good deal of humor sprinkled through the story, and horror as well. The Volturi are creepy, the encounter with them terrifying. The whole scene kept me up way late. I probably shouldn’t have tried to read that chapter right before bed, not good for your peace of mind.

Overall, I loved this book, love triangle and all. Jacob is really the star of this one, and I can totally get why some people would tend to take his side. Then again, it’s hard to argue against Edward, flaws and all. He is obviously Bella’s soul mate, whatever that’s worth. No matter how good Jacob would be for Bella, her heart belongs to Edward, and honestly I don’t think Bella’s right for Jacob.

I’d recommend this book to those who like YA romance, particularly with love triangles, werewolves, and vampires. It compares pretty closely with the movie of the same name, which I must admit I watched first. I thought it was fantastic that the movie was able to so vividly bring the book to life, and so accurately, which I didn’t realize until I finished reading New Moon.
